The Yoga of the Cosmic Form

Chapter Summary

Arjuna asks to see Lord Krishna's universal form. Krishna grants him divine vision, revealing His limitless, terrifying, and glorious form containing all universes, gods, and beings. Overwhelmed by this sight, Arjuna offers prayers and asks Krishna to return to His original, pleasing form.

Verse 11.8

न तु मां शक्यसे द्रष्टुमनेनैव स्वचक्षुषा |
दिव्यं ददामि ते चक्षुः पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम् ||

na tu māṁ śakyase draṣṭum anenaiva sva-cakṣuṣā |
divyaṁ dadāmi te cakṣuḥ paśya me yogam aiśvaram ||

Translation: But you cannot see Me with your present eyes. Therefore I give you divine eyes. Behold My mystic opulence!

Verse 11.12

दिवि सूर्यसहस्रस्य भवेद्युगपदुत्थिता |
यदि भाः सदृशी सा स्याद्भासस्तस्य महात्मनः ||

divi sūrya-sahasrasya bhaved yugapad utthitā |
yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syād bhāsas tasya mahātmanaḥ ||

Translation: If hundreds of thousands of suns were to rise at once into the sky, their radiance might resemble the effulgence of the Supreme Person in that universal form.

Verse 11.32

श्रीभगवानुवाच |
कालोऽस्मि लोकक्षयकृत्प्रवृद्धो लोकान्समाहर्तुमिह प्रवृत्तः ||

śrī-bhagavān uvāca |
kālo ’smi loka-kṣaya-kṛt pravṛddho lokān samāhartum iha pravṛttaḥ ||

Translation: The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Time I am, the great destroyer of the worlds, and I have come here to destroy all people.
