Drona Parva (The Book of Drona)
The brutal war, the Chakravyuha, and the fall of legends.
Summary
The Drona Parva covers the 11th to the 15th day of the Kurukshetra War. After Bhishma's fall, Dronacharya is appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the Kaurava army. This parva is characterized by intense and ruthless fighting, with rules of war often being violated. Drona promises Duryodhana that he will capture Yudhishthira alive, but his attempts are repeatedly foiled by Arjuna.
The most tragic event of this parva is the formation of the Chakravyuha (wheel formation) by Drona. In Arjuna's absence, his young son Abhimanyu enters the formation but is trapped and brutally killed by multiple Kaurava warriors attacking him simultaneously, violating the codes of war. Enraged, Arjuna vows to kill Jayadratha (who blocked the Pandavas from saving Abhimanyu) before sunset the next day. The parva also features the night war, the death of Ghatotkacha by Karna's Shakti weapon (saving Arjuna), and finally, the death of Drona himself through a deceptive stratagem involving the "Ashwatthama" elephant.
