Udyoga Parva (The Book of the Effort)

Peace missions, preparations for war, and the failure of diplomacy.

Summary

The Udyoga Parva details the period immediately following the Pandavas' exile. Having completed their thirteen-year term, the Pandavas demand the return of their kingdom, Indraprastha. However, Duryodhana refuses to give them even a needlepoint of land without war.

The parva describes the diplomatic efforts to avoid conflict. Krishna goes to Hastinapura as a peace messenger (Shanti Duta) but is insulted by Duryodhana, who attempts to capture him. Krishna reveals his cosmic form (Vishwaroopa) to the assembly. Both sides gather allies and armies. Arjuna chooses the unarmed Krishna as his charioteer, while Duryodhana chooses Krishna's mighty Narayani army. The book concludes with the armies marching to Kurukshetra, making war inevitable.
