Agni Purana

The ancient encyclopedia of knowledge narrated by the Fire God.

Summary

The Agni Purana is one of the eighteen Mahapuranas and is unique for its encyclopedic nature. Narrated by Agni Deva (the Fire God) to Sage Vasistha, it covers a vast array of subjects beyond just mythology and theology. It is considered a compendium of ancient Indian knowledge.

While it primarily extols Lord Vishnu and describes his avatars (including the Ramayana and Mahabharata summaries), it also dedicates significant sections to Shiva, Devi, and Ganesha. What sets it apart is its detailed treatment of secular subjects such as law (Dharmashastra), medicine (Ayurveda), martial arts (Dhanurveda), architecture (Vastu), grammar, and politics (Rajadharma). It serves as a guide for both spiritual liberation and worldly success.
