Summary
The Brahma Purana is traditionally listed as the first among the eighteen Mahapuranas, hence it is also known as the Adi Purana. It is narrated by Lord Brahma to the sages on Mount Meru. The text covers a wide range of topics, including the creation of the universe (Srishti), the genealogy of gods and sages, and the geography of the earth.
A significant portion of this Purana is dedicated to the description of holy places (Tirthas), particularly those along the banks of the river Godavari (Gautami Mahatmya) and in the region of Odisha (Purushottama Kshetra/Puri). It also contains detailed accounts of the avatars of Vishnu, especially Krishna, and emphasizes the worship of the Sun God (Surya) in Konark.
